Blues Notes

Older Men

So there’s this guy at the gym that has been checking me out. What began as innocent glimpses of me on the stairclimber and Nordictrac recently progressed to asking my name and making idle chat. Every morning at 4:30 we both stroll into the gym ready to get our “fit” on. Then one day, in passing, he turned around and asked me my name with an outstretched hand. We made minor chat before proceeding to our designated workouts; him outside, me inside.

The next morning he says, “Good morning, Jewells,” before I could even walk through the gym doors. It was cool though. The fact that he was loaded with my name on his tongue brought a smile to my face. (Hey, I’m single so flattery goes a long way these days.) After 45 am-I-dead-yet minutes on the stairclimber, I trotted on in the weight room. Low and behold, he was in there. We chatted it up a good while, talking about nothing really, but talking nonetheless. He was lifting 65lb dumbells while I had 10 pounders in my hands (inside I’m sure he was laughing at me). The hand weights were boring him and he needed to move on to some heavy duty lifting. But before walking off, he shook my hand, held it and told me, “be good.” He let go for a second, looked at me and told me that I am a very pretty lady. I told him that he is a very handsome man. He shook my hand again and left.

I’m sure you’re wanting me to get to the point. I’m on my way. Had to give some background.

As the days went by, we continued to make idle chat. He’s a really nice guy. Very attractive. He’s different from what I’m used to though. Very muscular, not bulky, but very muscular. I usually like the skinny guys that you have to touch to know there’s muscle. With this guy you can see the muscles a state away. Back to my point… He’s a nice guy, nice to look at, but that’s about all. From our conversations, I found out that he is retired from the military, so I’m putting him in his late 30’s to mid 40’s. Typically I like older men, however, I’m finding myself pretty bored here. I’m not sure if it’s because of his age or if he’s just slow. Slow meaning… his inability to move past the slow talk. We’ve established the attraction so let’s make the connection. We know it’s there so let’s move past the “have a good weekend,” “be good,” “blah blah blah ” and exchange numbers, have lunch, catch a movie or something … anything.

The way he looks at me with hesitation in his eyes makes me think he wants me to make a move. Well, I’m tired of tying the laces here. I’m ready to meet someone who already has their laces tied and is ready to get this run on the road. Seriously! Is it his age? Is he lame? Is he simply being respectful? Is he married? Do I intimidate him? Shoot, what is it? I believe in taking my time with things but this is going on almost two months now. I’m almost 30. This basic, do you like me? yes, no, maybe crap is for the birds. I’m not trying to have someone run game on me or play me like “bumby at the bank” but..er ummmm, I need more than this.

I start working out with him and his crew next week, so we’ll see if he steps his game up.

What do you think the issue is?
